The same dress drawn on paper can become three completely different garments depending on one decision: the fabric. Weight and drape decide whether your design flows, hangs structured, or sits somewhere between. Here is how to think about it before you sample.
What Fabric Weight Actually Means
Fabric weight is measured in GSM, grams per square metre (or ounces per yard). Lightweights sit roughly below 150 GSM, midweights around 150–250 GSM, and heavyweights above that. The number tells you how much fibre is in the cloth, and that single number drives how the garment will hang, move and wear.
Light, Medium or Heavy, What Each Does
- Lightweights (voile, chiffon, fine poplars), fluid drape, breezy movement, sheer possibilities. Perfect for flowy dresses, blouses and summer styles
- Midweights (cotton poplin, linen, standard shirtings), the balance point: structure with movement. The workhorse range for shirts, dresses and uniforms
- Heavyweights (denim, canvas, coating wools), architectural shapes, structure and durability. Built for jackets, pants and pieces meant to hold a line
- Government & Institutional Uniform Manufacturing in Indonesia
Neither end is better, a design that needs to float will fight a heavyweight cloth, and a jacket that needs structure will go limp in a weight that is too light.
Matching Weight to Garment Type
Shirts usually want midweights with enough body to hold a collar. Dresses depend on the silhouette: fluid for wrap styles, firmer for A-lines. Uniforms need mid-to-heavy weights that survive industrial laundering while keeping their shape. Tell your factory the garment type and the silhouette you imagine, and the right weight range follows.
Why This Matters Before Sampling
Fabric weight affects the pattern (heavier cloth needs different ease), the cost (weight drives price), and the sample you will hold in your hands. Sampling is where you confirm the drape behaves the way your design imagined, one of the main reasons we sample before every bulk run.
