We cut and sew resort uniforms on one woven floor in Bandung, and the Maldives is the market where every garment we make travels by sea to an island that cannot make its own. Resorts there buy their staff wardrobes from external suppliers, with the general manager’s office signing the order, and the trade press that covers those GMs records a taste for designed uniforms rather than plain stock. Our factory has run since 2000.
Who signs for a resort’s uniforms?
The general manager’s office buys, and the industry’s own forum shows it: uniform suppliers market themselves to resort GMs through the trade’s GM gathering, where a growing appetite for designed uniforms is on record. A resort’s wardrobe spans departments, each with its own cloth and cut, ordered together so the colours match across the island. Uniform agents buying on a resort’s behalf use the same lane and the same minimums. Buyers arrive at two moments: the opening, when every department needs its first set at once, and the years after, when replacement runs arrive small and often.
When does a Maldives uniform programme get confirmed?
The calendar anchor is the tourist season: the dry, high season runs from November to April, and the wet monsoon takes over from May. Resorts work around that clock. The industry press records island resorts closing through the monsoon for renovation and reopening ahead of the next peak, one private island reopening in mid-September after its works, others reopening in December. A uniform programme serves the reopening date, and our production clock sets the confirmation month.
| Target reopening | Bulk order confirmed | Cartons packed | Alongside in Malé |
|---|---|---|---|
| September to October | By April | Late June, twelve-week line | Late July |
| December | By July | Late September, twelve-week line | Late October |
Both chains are budgeted at the slowest stage, with clearance and the island delivery leg still to come before the doors open. A May confirmation for a September reopening leaves the container alongside at the end of August or into September, with clearance and the island leg still to run, so the order serves the peak season’s second month rather than the reopening. A reopening outside these two windows is planned the same way backwards from its date, confirmed at quote.
What does the border charge?
This lane carries duty, and a buyer should see it early. Maldives customs applies a 15% tariff on apparel under the 2014 amendments to the country’s export-import law, and each garment’s tariff line is confirmed against its HS code on the customs tariff schedule when the quote is priced. Import GST adds the general rate, 8%, read at quote alongside the duty. The quote lists duty and GST each on its own line, so the landed cost per garment is settled before the order is confirmed, not after the container is on the water.
How many weeks does the container take to reach Malé?
Roughly three to four weeks port to port as a planning estimate, typically transhipping via Colombo or Singapore, with no direct service published between Indonesia and Malé. The final leg from port to the resort island is arranged with the consignment, so door-to-door timing is quoted per order rather than published. Replenishment runs after the opening travel the same lane in smaller volumes, which is why the first order is planned with its reorders in mind: the 500-pieces-per-style lane runs on Kizen Lab, FOB, for exactly those smaller runs, while full opening programmes start at 1,000 pieces per style, with cloth developed from scratch from 1,500.
What makes a resort order different?
One opening order spans departments whose garments share a palette but not a pattern, cut on the same Lectra system and fitted to the same size grid, so a large-sized shirt fits the same shoulders in every department. The years after the opening repeat the same styles, re-cut on the stored patterns, arriving in small runs that match staff turnover. Send the current garments or a spec sheet and a fit sample comes back within two weeks; the quotation follows the approved sample.
Send the department list, a rough size split per department and the reopening month through the contact page, and the quote comes back per department.

FAQ
Is there duty on uniforms imported into the Maldives?
Yes. A 15% tariff applies to apparel under the 2014 amendments to the export-import law, and the exact line for each garment is confirmed against its HS code when the quote is priced. Import GST adds 8% at the general rate, staged at quote with the duty.
When should a reopening order be confirmed?
By April for a September or October reopening, and by July for a December reopening. Both planning lines are budgeted at the slowest production stage and allow the three-to-four-week crossing before clearance and the island delivery.
How many weeks does the container take to reach Malé?
Three to four weeks port to port as a planning estimate, typically via Colombo or Singapore, with no direct service published. Timing door to door, including the island leg, is quoted per consignment.
What size is a replenishment run?
Replenishment runs sit on the 500-pieces-per-style Kizen Lab lane, FOB, arriving small and often against staff turnover. Opening programmes start at 1,000 pieces per style.
What happens if the reopening date moves?
A confirmed order re-plans on the same clock around the new date. Air freight buys back weeks where the schedule demands it, at a much higher cost that the quote prices separately.
